A bottle of white wine is much like a can of soda in that one taste of it lukewarm is often enough to shift ones desires elsewhere. Yes, there are exceptions, but it is often the case that someone desiring a glass of white is imagining the flavor accompanied by a crisp, cold temperature. White wine is refreshing to the palate when chilled, and dull to the senses when lukewarm. Unlike a can of soda though, which can be thrown in the freezer for a few minutes to reach its desired temperature, a bottle of wine can take much too long to cool for the poor of plan. That is, at least, until the inception of single bottle wine chillers.
There are two common types of single bottle chillers that are widely used, of which this author has a clear bias away from one, and toward the other. The two types are manual chillers and electric wine bottle chillers. The manual chiller is, quite frankly, a glorified ice box. They tend to be much less expensive than the electric versions for good reason. Their cooling method is based upon shaping the cooler to fit an ideal amount of ice strategically around the bottle to facilitate natural cooling. The benefit of this is clear- Price. The disadvantages are equally clear- Inconvenience, time, and effectiveness. Be prepared to have a fresh stock of ice handy; Leaving one to ask why a device that is made to satisfy the needs of poor planning, requires more planning to utilize
Then came the invention of electric single bottle units. These little monsters utilize the Peltier effect to move heat out of one area, and into another. In essence, moving the heat out of your bottle of wine to leave nothing but cool, crisp enjoyment. Not only are they conveniently made to be used in home and on the go, with several models compatible with car adapters, but they are stylish and silent. Don't expect a single bottle cooler to sound like your at home refrigerator when it turns on.
If you need even faster cooling action, a hybrid-model may be the way to go. Several Electric units exist that utilize both the Peltier effect and ice to double the effectiveness. Some have even included technology to actively circle the ice around the bottle. Combining all these cooling methods in one package gives you the piece of mind to know that your bottle is cooling as fast as technologically possible- Refreshment is on its way.
